What makes a hero?

The subject of a short story competition run by Writers’ Forum for the 2016 Purbeck Literary Festival was just that: Heroes.

The recovering hero

For my entry I decided to write, not about the actual time of heroic action or endurance but about the aftermath.

After all, heroism may be a reflex action or a survival mechanism at the time of crisis. It may be only afterwards that reactions set in.

Then what kind of heroism is required to come back to normal life – or to find a new normal when life has been turned upside down?

I was happy to hear that my story had won and will be published in Writers’ Forum magazine which can be ordered from WH Smith or other newsagents or downloaded as an app. .

The prizes will be presented at the Grand Hotel, Swanage on Tuesday 23 February as part of a Purbeck Literary Festival event by novelist Jill Mansell at 11.30 a.m.
